Achievement Unlocked: Downhill Skiing
March 2, 2013 in Downhill Skiing, Exercise, General Inspiration by Matt Maggiacomo
At the very moment this blog goes live, Lauren and I will be taking a downhill skiing lesson at a mountain in Vermont. This will be my first time skiing in 15 years. Which is another way of saying that this is the first time in 15 years that my body is actually capable of downhill skiing.
I’m pretty nervous. Skiing was my favorite activity as a child. My aunt used to own a little vacation home in New Hampshire back in the day, and my family would go up to ski several times throughout the winter. I was an advanced intermediate to easy expert skier by the time I was 11 years old.
I stopped skiing in high school because I stopped exercising altogether in high school, so my last time skiing was actually just a day trip with some friends in college, circa 1998. I was able to jump right back onto the intermediate trails and I only face-planted once. I considered that a huge achievement at the time.
I have no idea what I’ll be capable of today, but either way I consider this a victory!
Wish me luck!
Also, my question of the day: Do you have some crazy activity that you haven’t been able to do for a while, but you’re itching to do once you’ve met some of your fitness goals?! Tell me about it in the comments! I have faith in you! GO GET IT!

I used to love mountain climbing, but I haven’t done that in over 10+ years (since 8th grade) and would love to do so again. I’m also working to get my next belt in karate, it’s going to be a couple years of 3-5 classes a week though until I am both up-to-par and ready to test.
Congrats on going downhill skiing again! Have fun!
Okay, this isn’t really a “crazy” activity, but I really love riding my bike to work. It’s way too cold to attempt it now, but hopefully in the spring I’ll be healthy enough to do it again without feeling sick.
I WANT TO KNOW HOW SKIING WENT.
Okay, so at CrossFit, we do all kinds of crazy shit. One thing that seems silly is hanging from a pull-up bar thing and touching our toes to the bar, hanging, rinse, repeat. It sounds easy and it looks like something I used to do for fun at the playground. It used to be SO SIMPLE. Now I look like a flopping fish when I try. I feel ridiculous. I want to be able to get my toes to the bar with ease! I also want to do pull ups. I think both of those abilities will come at the same time. Oy.
